Black Eyed Peas – Yesterday

Marking their twentieth anniversary and sweeping all references to Fergie unceremoniously under the rug while doing so, The Black Eyed Peas have released a new single and video, ‘ Yesterday’, overnight.

Still, when the Peas did another music video reminding fans of their hip-hop credentials, “Like That”, which featured Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, CeeLo and John Legend, Fergie wasn’t on the track, but still appeared in that video. Singer Fergie, who joined in 2002 (coinciding with their ascent into the pop world) is not in the video at all.

The Black Eyed Peas’ new album will be released later this year.

However, after five minutes of reflecting on hip-hop’s golden age, Will.i.am starts repeating “I’m taking you to the future” as the backing beat becomes more elastic, slowed down and comparable to Black Eyed Peas’ newer albums. As they select some classic hip-hop album covers, they recreate the artworks nearly by magic. It’s great to see the group return to their roots and pay homage, especially considering the massive success they achieved when they first broke away from that sound.
