J.J. Abrams’ newest addition to the saga has now made $758.2 million within the US, passing James Cameron’s “Avatar” for the highest grossing domestic film of all-time.

It’s early days yet, though.

It had an equally impressive second weekend, earning $153.5 million, another record. If those were the final numbers it would end up just ahead of “Avatar” directors’ other big earner “Titanic”, which earned $2.19 billion globally.

But Forbes notes that the worldwide box office is an entirely different issue.

This number doesn’t account for inflation, of course; on adjusted lists, The Force Awakens is still at #21 with an adjusted gross of $750 million, while Avatar is at #14 with $837 million. It’ll have to make a billion more dollars just in the U.S.to hit the No. 1 spot (currently occupied by Gone With the Wind, with the original Star Wars in the No. 2 slot).

In contrast, Box Office Mojo reports that “Avatar” took in a domestic haul of $760.5 million in 238 days of release, a significantly longer time.

Hasbro previously said that Rey was ignored to prevent fans from finding out that she “takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance” in The Force Awakens.
