When the U.S.-Canada numbers are adjusted for ticket price inflation, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is actually the 21st-highest grossing film in history, according to Box Office Mojo.
According to Disney, J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars” earned enough on Wednesday to pass “Avatar’s” $760.5 million lifetime gross.
As for worldwide, The Force Awakens may settle in in third, possibly second, when its run is over… behind Cameron’s Titanic ($2.186 billion) and Cameron’s Avatar ($2.788b). With the holiday season over and more films opening like The Revenant’s wide release this weekend, The Force Awakens is expected to drop off and may fall as low as the twenty million dollar-plus range for this weekend.
As to the worldwide gross beating Avatar, that’s a big question mark. To date, Star Wars has earned $1.557 billion worldwide, with $799 million overseas alone. The movie lately overtook Avengers: Age of Ultron for sixth place globally with $1.5 billion, & exclusively opened in China on Sun.so there’s nonetheless loads of room to grow.
“Avatar” was No. 1 for seven weeks, and in the top 10 for 14 weeks.

Its success bodes well for Disney, which bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012 and has multiple other “Star Wars” movies planned and stands to reap rewards across business segments including toys, video games, theme parks and television.
