Local Gun Dealers Respond to Executive Actions

US President Barack Obama on Tuesday unveiled some executive measures on gun control, including expanding background checks and calling for “a sense of urgency” about gun violence.

Obama plans to sit down Thursday with CNN’s Anderson Cooper and take questions from a live audience at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, in the suburbs of Washington DC.

She said President Obama’s executive order closing the gun-show loophole was justified because Congress had numerous opportunities to pass gun-control legislation, but failed to act. And Congressman Ralph Abraham says the plan is trampling on the rights of gun owners.

Murphy said the families can see that some gun control progress can be made more than three years since the shooting, even if it doesn’t happen in Congress.

“Background checks at gun shows are already being done, I know this because I’ve bought them”. He is unsure if someone who sells a gun once or twice is considered to be engaged in the firearm business, which would require them to be federally licensed. While Goddard applauded the president for adding more ATF agents, FBI investigators, and investing in smart gun technology, he said the president’s effort to expand background checks fell short.

“We have people that come in here with criminal records that attempt to buy firearms”.

Bullock, an activist for the Change Agent Consortium, said that he likes the fact that President Obama is leading the way on gun reform. The ATF is also finalizing a rule to make sure dealers notify law enforcement if guns they are shipping are lost or stolen en route. But private unlicensed dealers selling guns at places like gun shows and online don’t have to.

Executive actions are not permanent and could be overturned if a Republican is elected president.

Ryan also dedicated himself to fighting against Obama’s new executive orders.
