Fantastic Voyage has been kicking around for awhile as a remake-ready property, and del Toro is exactly the kind of stylish filmmaker that could not only give the effects a good redesign but also improve on the vaguely entertaining original.

Del Toro and Goyer are reportedly still tweaking the script, which will focus on a team of scientists shrinking themselves to a size smaller than a human cell in order to explore, head-first, a viral invasion taking place inside of a very important person’s body. The only other info is that “the new movie is aimed at being an event-sized tentpole for the studio”, but no date is set yet. Goyer wrote the treatment and, with Justin Rhodes, the script for the new Voyage.
Negotiations are still in the early stages, though del Toro’s potential involvement would reunite the director with his Blade 2 screenwriter David Goyer, who has remained attached to the Fantastic Voyage remake for years at this point.
Fantastic Voyage is at Fox under James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment banner. The film is a remake of the 1966 original, directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Raquel Welch and Donald Pleasence.
Matt Reilly is overseeing for Fox. I would imagine the remake would use that film as a blueprint, but given Del Toro and Cameron’s history as visual storytellers, you know they’re going to put their own spin on this and up the ante to try to make something spectacular for the big screen. But sources now say Rim 2 is off the table indefinitely, leaving del Toro wide open to choose his next project.

Del Toro’s involvement may change if Chinese corporation Wanda closes the deal on acquiring Legendary Pictures, the home of Pacific Rim.
