Shenmue III’s Creators Announce: PayPal Backers Won’t Get Exclusive Rewards

Shenmue 3 developer Ys Net ruffled some feathers recently when it decided not to extended backer rewards that had previously been offered as “Kickstarter exclusives” to PayPal supporters.

According to an update on the game’s Kickstarter page, the results of the poll held past year asking whether or not Kickstarter Exclusive Rewards should be made available for PayPal backers were the determining factor.

The studio chose to poll fans over whether people who backed the game on PayPal after the end of its Kickstarter should receive the same backer rewards as those who pledged via the crowdfunding site.

Others, meanwhile, say they support Ys Net’s decision to handle the campaign how it sees fit.

As you can see, the majority ticked the rather ambiguous third option labelled “Either is fine with me” (6432 votes); followed by those who were happy for all to share the spoils (4,670); then by those who thought the “Kickstarter-exclusive rewards are for Kickstarter only” (4,009). 6,432 (42.6%) said that they didn’t mind either way. “Those Exclusive Rewards will not be made available on the PayPal page as originally promised”.

“Since the launch of the Paypal campaign we have received numerous requests to remove exclusivity from certain Kickstarter rewards and make them available for the Slacker Backer campaign as well”, a representative explained in an email.

Kicking off the new year on a not-so-great start (for some), the team behind the Kickstarter success, Shenmue III, revealed bad news for its PayPal “slacker backers”.

Shenmue 3’s Kickstarter backers have since flooded the project with comments regarding the poll.

“Shenmue 3” is the upcoming open-world video game that is slated to be released in December 2017 for Microsoft Windows and Playstation 4.

This decision isn’t going over well with all backers.
