For once, the nation’s bitter, polarized politics failed to swamp a conversation on gun violence.

The idea that our laws should focus not on guns themselves but on preventing the people most likely to do our communities harm from getting guns is exactly why criminal background checks make so much sense. The result has been that this side of the President’s character has not always been on display.

President Barack Obama, left, speaks during a CNN televised town hall meeting hosted by Anderson Cooper, right, at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016. In short, that’s because the conditions he is changing by executive action are murkier than he made them out to be. For instance, in the aftermath of a mass shooting in OR in October, Obama said that such killing sprees were “something we should politicize”.

Can a government bureaucrat take away a constitutional right based on these bases without a judicial hearing? “Our position is consistently mischaracterized…” “If you listen to the rhetoric, it is so over the top, and so overheated”. “I’m only going to be here for another year, when would I have started on this enterprise?”

But the President found himself on the spot as well.

OBAMA: “A violent felon can buy the exact same weapon over the Internet with no background check, no questions asked”.

Obama’s most vocal adversary in the debate was not present, however.

“If the Republican Party would rather work for the NRA than for the American people, and if they won’t do their jobs to keep our children safe, than somebody else has to step up”, Warren said.

Either I’m watching too much Fox News or Bill O’Reilly last night took a relatively moderate stance on gun control.

Each year, 12,000 Americans are gunned down by their fellow citizens.

“At least let’s figure it out”.

But several gun owners peppered Obama with arguments against his gun rule proposals. The NRA is feared and respected in Washington for its ability to mobilise gun owners. Those selling more than a private collection must be licensed and conduct background checks.

But so far, Obama’s attempts to put in place more gun control measures have largely failed. “They’ll say sale, don’t sell or wait, so it’s going to overload the system”, said White.

“It’s the only time I’ve ever seen Secret Service cry, on duty”, Obama said.

He continued, “I’m happy to meet with them. I’m happy to talk with them”, he said. “They don’t think that way”.

Approval has climbed 8 points since a late-December CNN/ORC Poll, with increases coming primarily among Democrats (up 16 points from 56 percent in December to 72 percent now), but also among Republicans (up 11 points from 10 percent approval in December to 21 percent now).

He has also directed the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and Justice to conduct or sponsor research into gun safety technology and to promote the use and acquisition of smart gun technology. Critics allege that the “loophole” is exploited to sell guns to people who couldn’t pass a federal background check.

President Barack Obama says gun ownership is a very divisive issue because Americans in urban and rural areas live in different realities.
