President Obama seeks Mass. help with firearms agenda

The image, which was intended as a fundraising pitch, went up on Tuesday, shortly after Obama unveiled his executive actions aimed at reducing gun violence. Critics and Republican leaders accused him of undermining the Second Amendment right to bear arms and overstepping his authority.

After that tragedy, the Democratic president failed to persuade Congress to toughen US gun laws.

“We talk to customers a lot and try to find out where they’re coming from, it is a combination of policy and the terrorist attacks but primarily the terrorist attacks is where that increase is coming from”, Wallace said, adding that most people come in looking for concealed-carry pistols or rifles.

Obama is trying to make the case for tightening gun control rules, while fighting claims by opponents of such regulations that he’s trying to take away people’s Second Amendment rights.

Obama said he visited Newtown two days after what happened.

“These actions will not hold up in court”.

McBath now works with Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, and has testified before Congress on gun violence.

Regardless of the seller, it is illegal for a convicted felon to buy or possess a gun unless they have had their rights restored.

Those who strongly favor the changes outnumber those who are strongly opposed by about a 2-to-1 margin: 43 percent say they are strongly in favor, 21 percent strongly opposed.

Ahead of the town hall, Obama put political candidates on notice that he would refuse to support or campaign for anyone who “does not support common-sense gun reform” – including Democrats.

The president emphasized that the orders would not be a cure-all for gun violence, quoting to words of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.in saying the country needs to feel the “fierce urgency of now”. Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in 2011, stood as her husband, Mark Kelly, asked Obama about confiscation theories. “Government” included the lack of satisfaction with President Obama, Congress and other government leaders, as well as concern over the ethics of politicians and political conflict. In fact, federally licensed gun dealers are required by law to conduct background checks for gun purchases no matter where the sale takes place – in a store, at a gun show or online.

“Ultimately, this executive “guidance” is only a weak gesture – a shell of what the president actually wants”, said Kevin McCarthy, leader of the Republican majority in the House of Representatives.

Among the actions he wants taken are expanded background checks and federal licensing of “anybody in the business of selling firearms”.
