This morning Oculus Rift pre-orders went live on the company’s site.
Those who pre-order will be given an expected ship window (expectations for earlier pre-orders estimated a March shipping date; as of now, the expectation is April). Oculus Rift, the headset that first sparked interest in VR back in 2012 following a surprisingly successful Kickstarter campaign, has spent years under wraps. The kit is set to arrive with two free games in Lucky’s Tale and EVE: Valkyrie, the latter of which is available as part of the pre-order offer.
But many were annoyed by the price of the headset. Meanwhile, pre-orders for the Touch controller for the headset, which allows users to interact with their virtual sights and “pick up” virtual objects, are also being reserved with Rift pre-orders.
“There are a lot of mainstream devices in that price-range, so as you have said, our failing was in communication, not just price”.
The device will cost $599 almost double the much touted $350 price tag initiaslly put forward by Luckey at Oculus Connect in September.
Oculus Rift is the product of years of cutting edge research and engineering.
When compared with other VR headsets priced by brands like Samsung (priced at $99), Lickey left a message on his Twitter “To reiterate, we are not making money on Rift hardware”.
Naturally, there’s the question of if one’s computer will be able to handle the rigors of virtual reality or not.
