New dietary guidelines: lean meat OK, cut the added sugars
These new guidelines take the small-changes approach when aiming to adopt a healthy diet in hopes that these small steps create a more sustainable lifestyle of healthy eating. “There are many ways to stay healthy, but nutrition will always be at the foundation of good health”. “This healthier culture will help reduce our risk for heart disease and stroke – the two leading causes of death in the world”, said Mark Creager, M.D., president of the American Heart Association.

The recommendation “was certainly controversial”, says Tom Brenna, a nutrition professor at Cornell University and member of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.
One part of the guidelines reversed previous guidance on the consumption of eggs in relation to dietary cholesterol. The Obama administration’s new dietary guidelines, released January 7, 2016, back off the strictest sodium rules included in the last version, while still complaining that Americans consume too much salt.
Consume lower levels of sodium. In the USA, people consume up to 3,400 milligrams of sodium per day, an amount that can result in high blood pressure, according to Burwell. “As a result, the eating pattern may be more predictive of overall health status and disease risk than individual foods or nutrients…The goal of the Dietary Guidelines is for individuals throughout all stages of the lifespan to have eating patterns that promote overall health and help prevent chronic disease”. “One hundred percent juice is a simple way to get more fruit into the American diet”. “The dietary guidelines are for the food industry, so that they will hopefully reformulate products to meet those dietary guidelines“, he said. 11 percent of the average American’s diet consists of saturated fats. Three healthy eating patterns are recognized in the report: the Healthy US-Style Eating Pattern, the Healthy Mediterranean-Style Eating Pattern and the Healthy Vegetarian Eating Pattern, each of which include from 2 to 2.5 cup-equivalents of fruit daily in a 2,000-calorie per day diet. Trans-fats should be as limited as possible.
Cholesterol fears turned eggs into a reviled food.
The committee had also advised telling Americans to cut back on red and processed meats. These foods may also have higher amounts of saturated fats. Currently, some 13% of Americans’ daily calories comes from added sugar, a proportion that rises to 15 to 17% for children and teens.
As a whole, Americans – and especially teenage boys and men – are being urged to eat less animal protein and more vegetables.
