“I was here all day and I felt the aftershocks”, said owner Stephanie Sanders.

There have been no reports of damage or injuries and no tsunami warning was issued. The quake originated about 52 kilometres below the earth’s surface.

Janie Tyerman, who was at home in Tsawwassen, was sitting in front of the living room fireplace when the room began to sway.

“Nothing was dislodged from shelves at the store”, she said. “The next thing I knew the texts were coming in”.

Others on Twitter noted beds shaking, dishes rattling and Christmas decorations tinkling.

TransLink temporarily shut down two lines on Metro Vancouver’s SkyTrain system to assess if it was safe to operate after the natural disaster. Service resumed Wednesday morning.

As recently as 2012 a 7.7 Magnitude quake rattled the Haida Gwaii region, and in 1947, the province was the target of one of Canada’s deadliest earthquakes.

Shallow earthquakes cause more intense local ground shaking than deeper quakes of the same magnitude, though deeper quakes tend to be felt over larger areas.

Another resident from Victoria said they could feel the ground shifting during the quake.

Dan McNamara said Tuesday’s quake reactivated a new fault that runs from the Midwest Boulevard and Covell area toward downtown Oklahoma City. The epicenter was recorded about 60 miles northwest of Eureka, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. “And it continued, and it got worse and worse. “It woke up the whole neighborhood”.
