High Alert in Gurdaspur, Pathankot Districts

Gurdaspur is under heavy surveillance since the fatal terror attack on the Air Force base took place on January 2.

Earlier, the police cordoned off the world and enforced a blackout in all villages inside 5-kilometre radius because the spot is a brief distance away from the Pathankot air pressure base.

Scaling up the offensive against the government over Pathankot terror attack, Congress today asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fix responsiblity for the “grave security lapse” and suggested that some heads must roll.

He said the report was that two suspected people were seen in a village near Tibri Cantonment.

In this joint operation with the army, Punjab Police has deployed its Israel-trained SWAT team which have been especially trained to neutralise terrorists.

“We are mainly searching sugarcane field (to locate the movement of any suspect)”, Gurdaspur SSP Gurpreet Singh Toor said. “We have sealed the area and started search operations”, he said.

“A fact-finding enquiry has been instituted by the DGP, Punjab, on the news reports regarding statement of a Tanda-based woman who has levelled accusations of bigamy against SP Salwinder Singh”, a Punjab Police spokesman said here.

Locals in a village near Tibri cantonment of Gurdaspur district Wednesday reported sighting of two men in army uniform moving in suspicious manner, following which Army and police began the search operation. Punjab police has pressed into service the SWAT and dog squads are also assisting in the combing operation, officials said.

Till midnight, no suspected person was found and the search operation was suspended till the morning.

After a massive combing operation spanning over three days, security forces on Friday declared that the sprawling Air Force station in Pathankot in Punjab was fully sanitised, seven days after six terrorists struck.

The two border districts of Gurdaspur and Pahankot were on high alert, he said.
