‘Affluenza’ teen’s mom appears in Texas court

The mother “affluenza” teen Ethan Couch is set to be arraigned in Tarrant County Friday morning on a charge of hindering the apprehension of a felon.

“I explained to her that this was a jail, not a resort”, Anderson said.

Salvant set bond at $1 million and Couch’s attorney, Stephanie Patten, filed a motion asking for the bond to be reduced.

According to Salvant, Patten missed the hearing because she was stuck in traffic, but she was able to meet briefly with Couch before she was returned to her jail cell.

Before he went to Mexico, Ethan Couch was on probation for killing four people in a 2013 drunken driving accident when he was 16.

Tonya Couch and her son left Texas after a video surfaced on social media in early December showing Ethan at an alcohol-fueled party.

Couch made an initial appearance at court Friday on a charge of hindering the apprehension of a felon. The mother and son were arrested last month in Mexico, where Ethan Couch is now being held in an immigration detention facility.

The 48-year-old was wearing a yellow jumpsuit from the Tarrant County Jail as she stood in front of a judge who read the charge against her.

His son Luke was injured by Ethan Couch’s drunk driving crash.

Sheriff Anderson said Thursday, “it’s not a question of if he’s coming back, it’s a question of when he’s coming back”. At the time, many were outraged that a judge sentenced him to probation instead of jail time, slamming his now-notorious “affluenza” defense: Trial testimony suggested he was too rich and spoiled to understand the consequences of his actions.
