Plane Struck by Lightning After Takeoff From LAX, Makes Emergency Landing

Thousands of residents were without power Saturday due to a summer storm that produced heavy downpours, lightning strikes and flooding in parts of Southern California.

The lightning was apparently from a pulse of subtropical moisture and atmospheric instability blown into Southern California from the remnants of Hurricane Dolores. The popular Santa Monica Pier and its nearby beaches were also shuttered.

After lightning prompted a nearly two-hour closure of all Los Angeles County beaches Saturday, fire officials said beachgoers should be ready to “evacuate at a moment’s notice” as additional storms were predicted to hit over the weekend.

The Boeing 737, which was carrying 159 passengers to Washington, D.C., made a safe emergency landing, airline spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said. Beaches have been closed again until at least 4:30 p.m.! About 2,000 individuals have been affected in Lincoln Heights, three, 000 in Vermont-Slauson, 2,400 in South Los Angeles and 1,700 within the Westlake District, in response to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
