He said a seven-year-old and a three-year-old, who were passengers in the fleeing vehicle, were also taken to hospital with “minor injuries”.

Schmidt said the vehicle collided with multiple vehicles as it travelled the wrong way onto the southbound Highway 410 ramp to the eastbound Highway 407. All three people were in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The OPP cruiser was then stolen, a chase ensued, and the cruiser was ditched in the area of Winston Churchill and Eglinton in Mississauga.

The SIU, which probes any serious injury or death involving cops, was notified of the collision and invoked its mandate.

According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the events began around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 407 when police spotted a vehicle driving erratically.

At some point, least one suspect fled the scene and stole a police cruiser, officers say.

Using the vehicle’s global positioning system, police were able to locate the stolen cruiser using the vehicle’s global positioning system.

What happened next is now under investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.
