Snowfall, rain in Valley; Gulmarg coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir

The higher reaches of the Valley received fresh snowfall during the night while areas in the plains saw intermittent rainfall till this morning, a MeT official said, adding that there is a possibility of isolated rain or snowfall in the Valley later this week over two days beginning Friday. Visibility was recorded at 400 m at 5.30 am which dropped further to 300 m at 8.30 am.

In the Jammu region, the minimum temperature was 9.0 in Jammu city, it was 9.1 degrees Celsius in Katra town, 4.5 degrees Celsius in Batote, 5.0 degrees Celsius in Bannihal, 2.6 degrees Celsius in Bhaderwah and 5.8 degrees Celsius in Udhampur town, the official said.

Keeping with the trend, mercury increased in other places in the Valley as well with Qazigund, Kupwara and Kokernag registering the temperatures of 2.4 degree Celsius, 1.4 degrees Celsius and 1.6 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Wednesday’s maximum temperature settled five notches above average at 24 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature at 11.6 degrees was also five notches above the average. Nearby Kargil town was recorded as the coldest place in the state with a low of minus 9 degrees Celsius.

There was slight respite from biting cold in north India as temperatures remained above normal in most parts of the region except in Kashmir which received fresh snowfall on Tuesday. The upper reaches in the north Kashmir, including near the Line of Control (LoC) also experienced fresh snowfall since early this morning.

The 40-day period is followed by a 20-day “Chillai-Khurd” (small cold) and a 10-day-long “Chillai Bachha” (baby cold). The official predicted skies to be partly cloudy and a cover of shallow/moderate fog later in the day.
