“Afghan forces are now in control of the strategic district, where the Taliban presence had drawn concern from Tajikistan”, said Murad, who led the operation.

“Since launching the operations to recapture Darqad district, 17 rebels including Taliban shadowy district governor Mullah Basir nickname Mullah Kamal have been killed”, police spokesman for Takhar province, Abdul Khalil Asir told Xinhua.

“At least 40 suspected Taliban militants have been captured”.

MoI also added that various villages have been cleared from the militants in Sangin and Marjah districts of Helmand province as clearing operations still continue in different parts of the two districts.

Meanwhile, the Afghan Defense Ministry in a statement released on Saturday reported killing 30 armed militants during cleanup operations elsewhere in the conflict-hit country over the past 24 hours.

The operations were jointly conducted by Afghan national police, Afghan national army and Afghan intelligence – National Directorate of Security (NDS) operatives.
