The Powerball jackpot – and the hype – only continues to grow.

Now lottery officials estimate the jackpot is already at $1.3 billion ahead of the next drawing on Wednesday night.

The odds of winning tonight’s jackpot are one in 292 million.

“All eyes are on Saturday’s game”, Tracey Cohen, interim executive director of the DC Lottery, said in a press release on Thursday.

That means the record $949.8 million jackpot is expected to soar to $1.3 billion for Wednesday’s drawing.

To win, a participant must match five numbers between 1 and 69 and a sixth number between 1 and 26 that is drawn separately.

“They’ve been saying, ‘Give me the winning ticket.’ They’ve been coming in saying, ‘Give me a $160 worth of tickets, give me $200 worth of tickets, ‘” she said. POOLING YOUR MONEYSome players feel they increase their odds of winning by pooling their money with co-workers, with a promise to split the winnings.

The Powerball jackpot has been growing since November 4, 2015, the last time the jackpot was hit. It’s not clear if there’s ever been a lottery anywhere in the world where one person could win a billion dollars.

“I’m not spending more than $20 overall on tickets, I won’t go nuts like some people, but who knows?” One hopeful thought: Scott A. Norris, an assistant professor of mathematics at Southern Methodist University, says your tiny odds improve a bit if you let the computer pick your numbers rather than choosing yourself. Sales for Saturday night’s drawing had been robust, with people in 44 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico all getting into the mix.
