Netflix delivers strong 2Q with 3.3 million more customers

Wednesday’s announcement which showed the new subscriber numbers surpassed what the management of Netflix had projected. The on-demand video streaming company says it added 3.3 million customers in the April-through-June period and has now surpassed 65 million subscribers worldwide.

Its shares in the second quarter of 2015 also went up 9.4 percent-an uptick that Netflix partially attributed to its exponential addition of original television shows and films this year.

He touted successful first seasons for ‘Sense8, ‘ ‘Marvel’s Daredevil, ‘ ‘Dragons: Race to the Edge, ‘ and ‘Grace and Frankie.’.

Revenue jumped 22.7 per cent to .64 billion in the second quarter ended June 30, from $1.34 billion a year earlier, the company said.

At the end of its maiden day of trading after its 7-for-1 stock split in which pre-earnings jitters based on historical patterns had Netflix, Inc.

However, the main highlight of the report was the increase in subscriber growth.

Netflix is to make its debut in Asia with a launch in Japan by November.

“Second-quarter results demonstrate the transformation of our business as growth in data center, memory and IoT [Internet of Things] accounted for more than 70 percent of our operating profit and helped offset a challenging PC market”, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said in a statement Wednesday.

Netflix said in its conference call that it may push off its move into China beyond next year due to difficulty securing government permission.

One can guess how the company performs with its big investments in countries such as Italy and Spain this fall.

Including customers signed up for free trials, Netflix now has 65.55 million streaming members world-wide.

On a per-share basis, the Los Gatos, Calif.a-based company said it had profit of 6 cents. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters recently projected US4c a share, accounting for the split, on $US1.65bn in revenue.

Prior to the earnings release Greenlight Capital’s David Einhorn’s groused about Netflix’s original programming efforts, saying the popular House of Cards “appeared to be scripted to compete with Ambien”.

Compared to the year ago quarter, Netflix’s revenue grew by more than $300 million, more more than 20 percent.
