Metropolitan Fire Brigade’s deputy chief Andrew Zammit said emergency crews have been attacking the fire with more than 10,000 litres of water and fire retardant each minute.

Thick black smoke is billowing across the sky north of Melbourne, as a pile of tyres are on fire at an industrial site at Broadmeadows.

“Anyone located in the area should shelter indoors ensuring all exterior doors, windows and vents are turned closed and that heating and cooling systems are turned off”.

‘If you are indoors turn off your air conditioners, close your windows and if you’re feeling any affects from this fire call nurse on call, ‘ he said.

The MFB has issued a watch and act message for Broadmeadows, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Dallas, Fawkner, Gladstone Park, Glenroy, Gowanbrae, Hadfield, Jacana, Lalor, Meadow Heights, Reservoir, Thomastown and Westmeadows.

The advice says the fire may produce toxic fumes and people should avoid the area, although there is no immediate risk to the community.

It said about 50 firefighters and 15 trucks were on the scene and thick black smoke is visible from the CBD.

No homes are under threat but the MFB expects the fire to burn for several hours.

Youssef has confirmed that although the smoke is toxic, wind conditions mean it’s unlikely the smoke will come down to ground level.
