Meantime, a source told NBC News that authorities were aware that Penn and del Castillo were in Mexico to meet with Guzman.

Rolling Stone also published a video showing Guzman without a mustache, saying he chose to go into drug trafficking after the age of 15 because there were “no job opportunities” where he lived, and “no other way to survive”. Durango borders Sinaloa state, the centre of Guzman’s operations.

On Saturday, a Mexican federal law enforcement official said the quickest Guzman could be extradited would be six months, but even that is not likely because of the many appeals filed by his lawyers.

Kate del Castillo, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, and Sean Penn.

According to transcripts of the interview, El Chapo said that while he tried drugs when he was younger, he hasn’t touched them in two decades.

Authorities were able to locate Guzman, in part, because he wanted to make a biographical film, Attorney General Arely Gomez said before the article’s release, adding that the drug baron had “established contact with actresses and producers”.

But he also highlighted the extraordinary measures taken to protect Guzman, including flying Penn and his team aboard a plane that had a device that jams radar and ensuring they did not have their phones.

His recapture on Friday and placement in the same prison he escaped from last July prompted questions about his extradition to the United States. A senior Obama administration official on Sunday called a Mexican drug lord’s boasts about his heroin empire in a magazine article “maddening” but would not comment on repercussions for the Hollywood actor who interviewed him.

Guzman is charged with smuggling vast amounts of drugs into several US states. The U.S. government began to push hard for Guzmán’s extradition, citing security concerns.

Now, Guzman faces extradition to the U.S., to stand trial over his smuggling of billions of dollars of drugs from South America to the United States over the years.

When Donald Trump’s name came up in conversation, Guzman sarcastically said, “Ah!”

During the raid, he managed to flee through a drain but was later caught by marines in a shootout. Guzman’s attorney Juan Pablo Badillo has said that the defense already has filed six motions to challenge extradition requests. They closed in on the two men based on reports of stolen vehicles and they were arrested on the highway.
