Winter storm warning in effect until 7 pm Sunday

Winds will be 20 to 30 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour and could lead to downed tree limbs and power lines and hard travel for high-profile vehicles.

There was a full call of staff to help remove snow from the roads at 8 a.m. When the snow begins to stick, trucks will start plowing the roads, according to officials.

The weather will turn “very active” late tonight and Sunday as strong low pressure crosses the Great Lakes, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will be markedly colder this coming week, with highs in the 20s and overnight lows sometimes reaching the single digits. Sunday afternoon, dropping the local wind chill totals into single digits.

The heaviest lake effect snow from this weather is expected to mainly hit west and south of Rochester, and also east of Lake Ontario especially in the Tug Hill region.

The warning covers jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties.

“There’s no ice on the lake, so it’s fair game”, said Shawn Smith, weather service meteorologist.

A lake effect snow watch means that significant winter weather is possible in localized areas. Wednesday, there’s a chance of snow showers with a high near 22 and a low around 14. Friday: A chance of snow showers with a high near 27 and a low around 16.
