Canada “cut in half” as Ontario bridge splits in cold

The new Nipigon Bridge is about 100 kilometres away from Thunder Bay.

Ontario Province Police tweeted that the bridge is now closed in both directions for repairs. Seemingly optimistic reports suggest that the closure will last days, but online pictures of the damaged bridge point to a longer delay.

Half of the lanes of the new, $106 million bridge opened to traffic in November, as work on the other lanes continues and demolition of the old bridge was set to get underway.

The Ontario Government is working to find out what happened and to get the Nipigon Bridge re-opened.

“MTO engineers are now on site inspecting the bridge to identify the areas of concern and determine the measures necessary to ensure the bridge can reopen safely to traffic as soon as possible”.

If you were to drive to Toronto from Winnipeg, you would need to cross using this route.

As of January 10, 2016 7:08 p.m., the community of Lake Helen Reserve has declared a State of Emergency due to the uncertainty of the re-opening of the Nipigon River Bridge.

The options don’t help many Canadian truck drivers, like those pulling B-trains, whose trucks simply aren’t legal in the U.S. Nor will it help drivers presently stuck in the mess without the requisite border-crossing documentation.
