No one matched all six Powerball numbers Saturday night, leading to the astronomical prize.
The Powerball jackpot has increased to $900 million just hours before the drawing.
The odds of guessing the six numbers correctly are estimated at one in 292.2 million.
The new rules guaranteeing there would be a payout were brought in for the first draw after a jackpot reaches 50 million pounds.
The jackpot is so big that billboards in Texas and around the country have to advertise the price as $999 million because they’re not built to show billions.
The U.S. saw sales of $277 million on Friday alone and more than $400 million Saturday, according to Gary Grief, the executive director of the Texas Lottery.
Emily Burnett marks her numbers at the Eagle Market Store as she prepares to buy Powerball lottery tickets in Los Angeles, Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016.
Lottery officials drew the following numbers for Saturday night’s record $900 million jackpot.
Sales for Saturday night’s drawing, in which $949.8 million was at stake, had been robust in the participating 44 states, as well as the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
There are 292.2 million possible combinations of the five white balls and red Powerball.
The jackpot has ballooned since its November 4 starting point of $40 million and spurred huge ticket sales.
Officials with the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the Powerball game, expect about 65 percent of the possible number combinations to have been bought for Saturday night’s drawing.
“I would take a trip to the moon”, he said.
Jeffrey Miecznikowski, associate professor of biostatistics at the University at Buffalo, said in an email an American is roughly 25 times more likely to become the next president of the United States than to win at Powerball. He said he will buy another $20 worth of tickets even if thinking about winning more than a billion dollars scares him a bit.

The drawing will be held at 10:59 p.m. EST Saturday.
