Tributes are flowing in from across the world for singer David Bowie, who has died aged 69 following an 18-month battle with cancer.
A portrait taken on May 13, 1983 shows British singer David Bowie during a press conference at the 36th Cannes Film Festival. Bowie was to be honored March 31 at Carnegie Hall with tribute performances from the Roots, the Mountain Goats, Perry Farrell, Cyndi Lauper.
The news has since been confirmed byThe Hollywood Reporter as well as his son, Duncan Jones. He released his first self-titled album in 1967 and had some early success before his true breakthrough with 1972’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, a concept album that brought about his androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust.
In his 40-year long career, David Bowie made the glam rock, art rock, soul, hard rock, dance pop, punk and electronic genres his own.
The music icon with the dazzling, multi-coloured eyes released his last album Blackstar on his 69th birthday, 8 January, just three days before his death was made public.

Singer-songwriter Midge Ure, told Good Morning Britain: “We are all swimming in his wake, so I don’t think you could top, on creativity, and consistent creativity, I don’t think you could top, anyone could top, David Bowie in the United Kingdom musical history”. He also starred in films, including The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) and Labyrinth (1986). Because Bowie’s illness had been kept quiet, some fans immediately marked the news of his death as one of the year’s first internet hoaxes, later retracting their words as Bowie’s representatives confirmed the news.
