Stallone Gets Standing Ovation At Golden Globes
“The Revenant” an unexpected frontier-era revenge thriller set during the 1820s emerged as one of the biggest winners of the evening as it took away the Golden Globes best drama award followed by best motion picture comedy film by “The Martian”. Alicia Vikander (‘The Danish Girl” and “Ex Machina”), Lily Tomlin (‘Grace and Frankie” and “Grandma”), Idris Elba (‘Beasts of No Nation’ and “Luther’) and Mark Rylance (‘Bridge of Spies’ and “Wolf Hall’) were all nominated for two Globes this year, but the dual bids did not help.

Oscar Isaac prevailed as Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for “Show Me a Hero” on the HBO miniseries’s only nomination.
Two tales of survival, The Revenant and The Martian, dominated the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday. And with Netflix now moving into films, too, future Golden Globes may see further shake ups from the streaming industry.
“The Revenant” was a major victor with Leonardo DiCaprio getting the best actor award and Alejandro G. Inarritu as the best director for their contribution to the film.
Comedian, Ricky Gervais, returned to host for the 4th time and stood at the dais for his opening speech with a signature beer in hand – based on watching his red carpet pre-show interviews, it was at least his 5th or 6th drink of the night.
Gael Garcia Bernal, the star of “Mozart”, won for best actor in a TV comedy or musical, and Lisa Bloom of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” – which airs on the CW – took the trophy for best actress in a comedy or musical.
Lawrence, who spent much of the night with her new friend and collaborator Amy Schumer (herself a nominee for “Trainwreck”), scored her third Globe for a David O. Russell-directed film. The Beverly Hills, California, crowd greeted him with a standing ovation.
“I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had”, said Stallone, whose only other Golden Globes nod was also for portraying the Italian Stallion in “Rocky”.
Maura Tierney was another big surprise victor, taking Best TV Supporting Actress for “The Affair”, which won Best Drama Series in 2014 but was snubbed in every other category this year.
In the TV category, a lot of surprises were thrown in as ignoring Emmy-winner “Game of Thrones” and biggest getter in nominations, “Empire”, the drama award was given to lesser-known “Mr Robot”.
Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul”, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz.
The Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement honoree, often an emotional high point in the awards, also lacked a memorable moment.
But the U.S. drama’s star Rami Malek, heavily favored to win Best Drama Actor, was upset by Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”), who won his second Globe, but the first he was able to accept on live television: Hamm’s last Globe victory came in January 2008, when the Hollywood writers strike caused the Globes telecast to be cancelled.
