Golden Globes: ‘The Revenant’, ‘The Martian’ named best films
Matt Damon made a winning return to the Golden Globe awards on Sunday night, accepting the trophy for best actor in a motion picture comedy or musical for “The Martian”.

For rising actors like Larson, best drama actress nominee for “Room”, the Globes platform could be their first official awards “audition” that can determine how they fare in the race to the Oscars.
“The Revenant” also brought a directing prize for Alejandro Inarritu, who recalled the long arduous shoot in sub-zero temperatures.
Referring to the film’s arduous shoot in the Canadian Rockies, Innaritu said: “Pain is temporary”.
On what he’s done with the Globes he’s won: “To be fair, that was a joke about shoving Golden Globes, that I’ve won, up my ass and they asked me to host four times”.
This award season has lacked definition and two of the top critical picks – the journalism procedural “Spotlight” and Todd Haynes’ lesbian romance “Carol” – went home empty-handed.
Other popular winners includes Sylvester Stallone, 69, who received a standing ovation as best supporting film actor for reprising his iconic role as boxer Rocky Balboa in “Creed”, beating presumed frontrunner Mark Rylance for “Bridge of Spies”.
“I’m going to do this monologue and go into hiding”, said Gervais.
The absence of “The Force Awakens” – a certain ratings booster for any awards show – will surely be one of the things Gervais needles the Hollywood Foreign Press Association about at the Beverly Hilton Hotel ceremony, which runs from 8-11 p.m. EST, telecast live on NBC.
She said: “I am extremely surprised and overwhelmed”. Academy Award nominees will be announced Thursday.
Later, to introduce Matt Damon, Gervais took a swipe at Ben Affleck.
Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul”, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz, and best animated film went to Pixar’s acclaimed “Inside Out”.
Gervais’ snark aside, the Golden Globes have worked for years to shed an image of eccentric selections made by a group of little-known worldwide journalists.
The award ceremony may witness “Empire” or “Mr. Robot” getting the best TV series drama.
Later in the evening, Jamie Foxx poked fun at Steve Harvey, imitating when the “Family Feud” host got the victor of Miss Universe wrong.

For his fourth time hosting the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais started his monologue with a reference to the latest Hollywood topic, Sean Penn’s interview with drug lord “El Chapo”.
