Ever since the company struck a deal with Finnish company, Nokia Inc. Microsoft’s SIM cards will also be based on Transatel’s SIM 901 card.

Its recent launch of Lumia 950 and 950 XL and the kind of response it has received for these devices in the introductory days has been exceptional. It reads, “The Cellular Data app allows you to connect to a trusted nationwide mobile data network using only your Microsoft account”.

The best part about the Microsoft SIM card is that one has the freedom to choose between different telecom carriers and choose the internet plan that one wants. This was discovered thanks to a cellular data app that was published to the Windows Store. The application can’t be downloaded by users just yet, but we have enough clues to figure out what to expect from it. However, The Verge has speculated that the company is trying to build a Mobile Virtual Network (MVN), which will make use of other network providers to deliver cellular service to Windows devices.

Microsoft also relies on the OS being able to send user data back to Microsoft in order to personalise these services, for instance to improve Cortana’s voice recognition. It promises a “reliable, convenient way to stay connected everywhere you go”.

The service will offered in selected regions at the time of its launch with a limited domestic plan. It’s an especially nice way to pick up service when you’re roaming internationally. First, Microsoft has released updates that install a new Group Policy Object.

Imagining Microsoft in the list of telecom giants around the world may be a little out of stride but it is not all impossible.
