As for Wednesday night’s Powerball jackpot of $1.3 billion, it is unknown how much a one time payout would be, though Reuters noted that Saturday’s 0 million jackpot would have paid out a total of $558 million instead of yearly payments.
Powerball is played in 44 states, as well as in Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The odds to win are 1 in 292.2 million. Anndrea Smith, 30, said Saturday that she already had spent more than she usually does on Powerball tickets.
To play, consumers choose five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26.
While there was no jackpot victor, more than 252,000 prizes ranging from $4 to $150,000 were won in IL during Wednesday night’s drawing.

While that’s the largest US lottery jackpot ever, lotteries elsewhere in the world can be far bigger.
The new total crushes both the lottery record of $656 million and the Powerball record of $590.5 million.
The winning numbers were 16, 19, 32, 34, 57, and a Powerball of 13. That’s the new Powerball jackpot. “I never would have thought it would have went up that high”. More ticket sales also make it more likely there will be a victor, as all the extra tickets mean more number combinations are covered.
And like many other players, he had given some thought to what he would do with the cash – “I would take a trip to the moon”. Ever. But like most of the other grand prizes on this list, the pot was split among multiple winning tickets with all the right numbers. Mr Collins said it was a shock that nobody won. The overall chance of winning a prize is 1 in 24.87.

Or to put it another way, the odds are equivalent to flipping a coin 28 times and getting heads every time, he said.
