Lindsey Vonn of the US skis in the women’s Super G race of the Alpine Skiing World Cup in Zauc …
The 31-year-old Vonn, who won the season’s only other super-G in Lake Louise in December, extended her record for any skier to 26 World Cup super-G victories and took her winning streak to four, stretching back to March 2015.
Cornelia Huetter (+1.66secs) continued her fine form this season with a fourth podium – the fifth of her career – as she claimed third place, with Larisa Yurkiw (+1.00secs) putting a little bit of pressure on Vonn as she finished nine hundredths behind her second run time.
Cornelia Huetter of Austria was 1.66 behind in third. She was 0.01 seconds ahead of Vonn at the last split, yet made a mistake at that spot that took off speed and cost her the chance of winning.
“I can do better, like staying in my tuck until the finish”, she said.
And in doing so, Vonn equaled Annemarie Moser-Proell’s record of World Cup downhill victories which has stood for 36 years.
“I thought Lara or Vicky could beat me, ” Vonn said.
Gut’s lead at the top of the standings has now been trimmed to just 38 points over Vonn as the halfway point of the season approaches, with the Swiss on 738. “But physically I am OK”, Gut said. The rest of the field had to make up at least 1.23 seconds on Vonn in the final run.
It was that bottom section where Vonn ultimately won the race.
Katja Seizinger of Germany won a record five super G races in a row between March and December 1997.
Up next, the women’s tech team heads to Flachau, Austria for slalom Tuesday.
Two sensational runs in Zauchensee blew the field away, Vonn comfortably taking victory by one second with an overall time of two minutes 11.17 seconds.
