How Marko Grujic’s Transfer to Liverpool Was Close to Being Scuppered

The Serbian midfielder arrived this week and has the distinction of being Jurgen Klopp’s first signing as Reds manager.

New signings are required to undergo a MRI scan during a medical, but the thought of spending time in a small space nearly put the 19-year-old off completing the deal.

And with both Jordan Ibe and skipper Jordan Henderson also set to return to the squad after injury set-backs, the German coach admitted he has more options for the clash with the league leaders.

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho are likely to return to action against Arsenal on Wednesday night. “We’ll see. I think Kolo will be available, so we will have a senior centre back”, he said.

“Mama wants to be available, hopefully we can use him and then we’ll see”.

“Martin Skrtel is still a few weeks away, and while Dejan feels good it is my decision”.

Things didn’t get much better at the start of this season, as two costly individual errors by Lovren saw Liverpool suffer a 3-0 defeat at home to West Ham United, one of many results which eventually led to the sacking of Brendan Rodgers.

“It’s close and there’ll be a moment when we have to decide if it’s a risk, or if it’s a risk we could try”.

Asked for an update on his injured midfielders, Klopp added: “Jordon Ibe, Jordan Henderson and Mama who I spoke about – we have three bits of good news”.

“Klopp wanted me to join Liverpool immediately because they have injury problems, but I didn’t want to leave Red Star before we win the title”, Grujic told the Liverpool Echo.

Grujic also revealed that Klopp has already given him a programme to follow to ensure that his transition to life at Anfield is seamless.

Klopp, speaking in the buildup to Wednesday’s Premier League game with the Gunners at Anfield, politely suggested that reporters should stop writing about Alexandre Pato joining the Reds. But it’s not the moment for this and we have to wait.
