Pistorius seeks to appeal murder conviction

South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius has filed an application to appeal his murder conviction, his lawyer Brian Webber said.

A judge overturned the former Paralympic champion’s culpable homicide conviction in December and found him guilty of the murder of Reeva Steenkamp.

He was originally convicted of manslaughter but that was overturned last month when he was convicted of murder.

He is now under house arrest after spending one year of his original five-year sentence in jail.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp through the door of a toilet cubicle in his home early on Valentine’s Day 2013.

Andrew Fawcett, Pistorius’s attorney, says the appeal is now in the control of the director of public prosecutions, who must determine whether there are reasons for appeal.

Under his bail, he was forced to hand over his passport, despite the Judge claiming he poses no flight risk, and is only able to leave his uncle’s house in Pretoria between 7am and midday, providing he stays within a 20 kilometres radius. They will now indicate when they will be opposing the application and what the grounds of opposition will be.

It has not been revealed how long the court will take to decide whether they will hear the appeal. However, prosecutors argued that Pistorius shot Steenkamp during an argument.

“He is wasting his time”. “If he ever succeeds, then I will know there is no justice in this country”.
