Carli Lloyd won the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year on Monday.
FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, the Argentina superstar, won the 2015 men’s player award, known as the Ballon d’Or, for the fifth time in seven years.
“I’m very, very honored and humbled”, Lloyd said.
Lloyd, who plays for the Houston Dash in the National Women’s Soccer League, garnered 35.3 percent of the votes submitted by 136 national team coaches, 135 national team captains and 106 media representatives.
Lloyd won the Golden Ball at the tournament for her fine form and leadership. Lloyd didn’t even make the top three.
Lloyd and Sasic both scored six goals during the 2015 FIFA World Cup, tied as the top scorers. It’s my honest gratitude to your effort and your belief in this team. I want to thank Sunil Gulati and U.S. Soccer for their continuing world class support and resources dedicated to the women’s game and of course all of my friends and family.
Having been part of the USWNT that lost on penalties to Japan in the 2011 final, the 33-year-old helped them avenge that defeat this summer in stunning style, with it more than fitting that Japan were the team they conquered to do so too.
