Six of the injured were discharged immediately after treatment while two seriously injured persons were shifted last night to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, he added.
“In fact, the base of the building was also week”, said an official of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). Several people are still believed to be trapped under the rubble.
Initial reports suggested that the building’s foundations had been weakened by an excavation at an adjacent plot of ground, where construction on a new structure was ongoing. The area around Vishnu Garden is a thriving marketplace of cheap clothes – including jeans – and families prospering from the trade have tacked on new floors and extensions to their homes and buildings. “Ten persons sustained serious injuries and they were rushed to nearby hospitals”, Press Trust of India quoted Dipendra Pathak, joint commissioner of West Delhi Range Police, as saying.
Rescue operations were on past midnight.
Police suspect the building, located in a narrow lane, was illegally built.
Eight fire tenders, teams of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), local police and officials from district administration are carrying out rescue operations at the site of the building collapse at C Block near Masjid Khayala area.
Delhi Fire Department Chief A T Sharma stated all involved businesses are working collectively to rescue these trapped underneath the particles.
