The Eagles needed permission for the interview because Coughlin resigned as New York’s coach with one year left on his contract.

Coughlin’s future was the main topic as players cleaned out their locker at the Giants’ headquarters on Monday.

Coughlin told reporters Tuesday he has “not necessarily” extinguished his coaching flame. Yesterday, head coach Tom Coughlin resigned. No one asked whether that applied to a division rival just 96 miles south on the New Jersey Turnpike. If Steve Spagnuolo doesn’t succeed Coughlin, then Coughlin can bring him as the defensive coordinator. Coughlin surely would be welcomed by the Eagles’ demanding fan base, which has stood by helplessly while watching him win two championships. Let’s not forget a couple of holdovers from Kelly’s staff in Pat Shurmur and Duce Staley, either. They are planning to interview Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson on Sunday, according to multiple reports.

Look at some of the names the Eagles are considering for their head coaching vacancy now.

Not in the slightest for Coughlin, as he stated his desire to continue his head coaching career elsewhere during his press conference. Coughlin also made the playoffs four times while with the expansion Jaguars.

Coughlin led the Giants to two Super Bowl wins with quarterback Eli Manning making clutch fourth quarter comeback victories in two games against the New England Patriots, and Philadelphia is clearly interested as they have never won a Super Bowl.

The bandage on running back Fitzgerald Toussaint’s nose, the wrap around linebacker Ryan Shazier’s leg and the uncertain status of Ben Roethlisberger and wide receiver Antonio Brown going forward offered proof it was not. He is 56 years old, so only five years older than Marrone, and he’s well-liked and respected around the league.

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports first reported the Eagles’ interest, but noted that the team’s impatience with Chip Kelly could hurt their chances of hiring Coughlin. The two Lombardi Trophies helped, too.

“Everyone knows you for your dedication to your team and how intense you are on the football field”, defensive lineman Justin Tuck wrote on Instagram last week. “I think its great he has an opportunity, compliment to the hard work hes put in and hes done a nice job, ” Reid said. “You did it the right way Coach”.

The Giants still have rights to Coughlin because he technically was not fired and instead stepped down from the position.

Gase appeared like one of the front-runners for the job.

Even Adam Gase, already hired by the Miami Dolphins, was so hyped everybody knew he would get a job somewhere, yet his claim to fame was coordinating the vaunted Chicago Bears offense.
