Liverpool approach QPR to take defender Steven Caulker on loan

Liverpool are set to sign Queens Park Rangers defender Steven Caulker on loan until the end of the season, according to the Mail.

Klopp is now struggling to field his best squad given that a number of his first-choice players are out with injuries.

The news is reported by, among others, Paul Joyce of the Express – a very reliable source for Liverpool information.

With Europa League commitments to restart next month, Klopp clearly wants more defensive cover and Caulker is available and Premier League experienced at least.

Caulker, 24, is now on a season-long loan at Southampton, where he has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular.

The German had none of his established centre-backs available for the FA Cup tie with Exeter last week, and while The Guardian claim that Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho should now be available for selection, Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel remain on the sidelines.

He has made just eight appearances for Southampton – the last of which came against Liverpool in last month’s 6-1 Capital One Cup quarter-final defeat – but only one of those has been a Premier League start back in August.

The Liverpool manager wanted centre-half Subotic from Borussia Dortmund, but his former club made it clear they were unwilling to do any business mid-season.
