Though many wondered whether it really belonged in the category at all, “The Martian” won the Golden Globe Award for best motion picture comedy or musical Sunday night, beating out “Joy, “The Big Short,” “Trainwreck” and “Spy”. Though Inarritu had a similar run at the Academy Awards last year with the best-picture winning “Birdman”, he won only a share of best screenplay at last year’s Globes.
“They’re more interested in what Lucy’s wearing, with this Frozen stuff”, Damon, 45, told reporters in the press room at the Beverly Hills Hilton.
He has been nominated five other times over the years but had not won until this year. Damon trumped Christian Bale and Steve Carell for The Big Short, Al Pacino for Danny Collins and Mark Ruffalo for Infinitely Polar Bear.
Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle”, about classical musicians in NY, was named best TV comedy. The Revenant also earned Best Picture and Best Director trophies for Alejandro GonzalezIñárritu.
Watching a man struggle for survival in a barren Martian wasteland sounds pretty grim, but according to the Golden Globes, The Martian is not a drama (and we can kinda agree with them). -Supporting Actor: Sylvester Stallone, “Creed”.
Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul”, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz.
