At the time, outrage followed when a judge sentenced him to probation instead of jail time.

The mother of a Texas teenager who used an “affluenza” defense after killing four people in a drunken wreck has posted a reduced bond and is expected to be released soon.

McWilliams testified that Fred Couch was “fairly adamant” he wasn’t going to give her money.

Couch’s son – being held in Mexico pending deportation proceedings – was placed on probation after he killed four people and injured several more in a drunk driving crash in 2013, when he was 16 years old.

But State District Judge Wayne Salvant said the objective of the bond amount is not oppression but of ensuring that someone makes it to trial. A witness for the defense said because his parents were rich and set no boundaries, Ethan Couch suffered from “affluenza”.

“This is way different than a typical hindering apprehension case, the allegation is that she actually carted someone across the border”, the prosecutor said.

Tarrant County Assistant District Attorney Kevin Rousseau, speaking about keeping the bail at $1 million, said, “She has shown she is willing to violate his probation and is willing to do so in a big way”, as reported by Yahoo News. Authorities in Tarrant County has been searching for the duo since Ethan Couch missed a December 3 probation appointment.

Investigator Darren Gabbert testified that he was told about the meeting by Ethan Couch’s friend Garrett Ballard. He said she doesn’t own any property and would be unable to pay her own bail.

A day after the video was seen on the Internet, she withdrew $30,000 from the bank and informed her estranged husband, who owns a metal works business, that he would never see his son again, an arrest affidavit said.
