Israeli soldiers shoot dead two Palestinian assailants – army

It was the latest in a series of attacks over the past three months that include stabbings, gunfire and vehicle rammings by Palestinians targeting Israeli forces.

Located in Ramallah, the university is the best-known in the West Bank, the Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967.

The incident was reported at the Bekaot checkpoint in the northern West Bank.

State Department John Kirby said Friday that “continued settlement activity and expansion raises honest questions about Israel’s long-term intentions and will only make achieving a two state solution much more hard”.

The IOF prevented the Palestinian Red Crescent crew from reaching the young man while he was left bleeding on the ground before they gave him first-aid help.

The cell, which included three Israeli citizens from Jerusalem and three residents of Hebron, was led in part by 36-year-old Hebron resident Maher Qawasmeh, who had previously been jailed for planning terror attacks for Hamas.

Asked what the secret police do with the information, he says: “They catch these guys and they kill them”.

At least 134 Palestinians died by Israeli fire, including 93 said by Israel to be attackers. The Israeli army also raided the university in June 2014.

Israel has been accusing the Palestinian authority of “inciting” the recent violence, while the Palestinians say it is a result of 49 years of Israeli control of their lands.

Relations between Israelis and Palestinians remain tense amid a wave of attacks on Israelis by Palestinians and some Israeli Arabs which have killed 22 Israelis since the beginning of October. Nawi is considerably more prominent: when he was arrested, in 2007, for attacking Israeli policemen during a West Bank demonstration, more than 20,000 people-including a long list of prominent Israeli academics as well as progressive American celebrities like Noam Chomsky and Naomi Klein-signed a petition demanding his release.

In Tulkarem, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society said, Israeli forces detained Ibrahim Sami al-Akhras and his brother Muhammad, as well as Ali Ayman Jazmawi.
