Lions hire Ernie Accorsi as advisor to team president

We should find out any day now whether new Detroit Lions manager Bob Quinn will retain head coach Jim Caldwell or look elsewhere for someone to lead his football team. He served as the general manager for the Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns and Giants for stretches, helping spearhead successful runs for all three franchises. “I have a great deal of respect for coach Caldwell”, said Quinn, saying he’d be meeting with Caldwell “in the next couple of days”.

Caldwell has spoken by telephone with Lions general manager Bob Quinn, but the two have not met in person since the Lions hired the GM on Friday.

And that is the kind of player Quinn says he expects to target to help fill the middle class of the team.

Bill Belichick showed up for a news conference Tuesday sporting a black eye, but wouldn’t reveal how he got it. You can’t just say I’m going to take the best available player.

Quinn started in the Patriots personnel department in 2000. Johnson is still a very good receiver – he caught 88 passes for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns this season – but the Lions could save $11 million by releasing him. “During his time in Indianapolis, we played against them numerous times. They just have a philosophy and a unique way of doing things and that’s what he’s going to bring to Detroit”. That’s what we have to do.
