There was, of course, a flood of David Bowie tributes yesterday, from tweets to longer statements, from anecdotes to favourite videos, to a mass sing-along in his birthplace of Brixton. “That David Bowie wasn’t the guy that’s on stage dancing around and trying to impress you”, Alomar said.
Bowie, the iconic rocker who created “Ziggy Stardust” and wrote numerous megahits in the ’70s and ’80s, died on Sunday after an 18-month battle with cancer. George was just 12 at the time but it had a phenomenal impact on him, with the now 54-year-old star calling it a “life changing and life affirming event”.
“I emailed him after the record came out and I complimented him on it, and I got a note back saying that he was very pleased with his work on it”, he said.
Gone, but never forgotten.
A number of other artists are also expected to take part to pay their respects to the “Man Who Sold the World” hitmaker. Joining the Archbishop of Canterbury in sending their tributes was British Prime Minister David Cameron, who described Bowie as “a master of reinvention” and a “genius”. That same day, he released his album, Blackstar. I can’t think of anyone more influential apart from perhaps Elvis Presley, John Lennon or Bob Dylan.
“Today we’re mourning the loss of an vast British talent”.
All but an inner circle were kept in the dark about the singer’s illness as he worked to complete his final album, “Blackstar”, released on his 69th birthday, just two days before his death.
Lisa Demmi remembers meeting David Bowie backstage.
It seemed that Lazarus was Bowie’s planned farewell and “parting gift” to his fans.
Former Simple Minds boss and music supremo Bruce Findlay met Bowie in Paris during the late 80s or early 90s.

In England, Celebrity Big Brother fans are upset with the show’s producers for depicting David Bowie’s ex-wife Angela Bowie as she learned about the news of the star’s death on Monday. “For me, frankly, as an artist, that’s the most satisfying thing for the ego”.
