“A speeding Audi auto knocked down Corporal Abhimanyu Gaud, who was supervising the parade, before hitting a barricade and coming to a halt”. Gaud was taken to the Military hospital in Alipore, where he was declared dead. The vehicle has been seized by the police and the driver is absconding. “We have taken up the matter with the police who are in charge of security during the parade rehearsal”, a senior defence ministry official said.

The vehicle, purchased recently, is said to have been registered in the name of the former legislator’s son. It is very unprecedented how he parked his vehicle and fled.

On the other hand, Kolkata Police has transferred the case to the homicide department of the Detective Department.

“But he left the challan of the auto inside which helped us locating the showroom from where it was bought”, he said.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Surajit Kar Purakayastha said efforts were on to nab the culprit. “We are looking into every aspect of the incident”.

Meanwhile, the Air Force has filed an FIR with the Maidan Police Station and the Kolkata Police have begun a lookout for the accused driver.

The incident took place early in the morning on the city’s Red Road, which was closed for traffic because of the drills. “Checking at all the entry and exit points have been beefed up so that he can not run away”, a police officer said.
