David Bowie had liver cancer, said friend

He says Bowie’s knack for misdirection in both interviews and music has influenced his approach to comedy.

David Bowie fans have laid flowers outside the former Orford Cellar in Norwich where he once played.

Bowie, the other-worldly musician who broke pop and rock boundaries with his creative musicianship, nonconformity, striking visuals and a genre-bending persona he christened Ziggy Stardust, died of cancer Sunday Jan. 10, 2016.

After praising the singer for having “one of the greatest senses of humor of anyone I’ve ever met”, the “Tonight Show” host revealed that they occasionally traded jokes back and forth via email.

Bowie, whose hits included “Space Oddity”, “Fame”, “Heroes” and “Let’s Dance”, died surrounded by family, representative Steve Martin said early Monday. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift.

His breakthrough came with 1972’s The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. Finally in 2005 we had dinner together in NY with Iman, Hedi Slimane, and my actor friend Michael Cavadias, the world’s other biggest Bowie fan.

The 1990s saw him flirting with drum-and-bass on the Earthling album, while his 2002 album Heathen saw a long-awaited return to form for the singer.
