FIFA fires secretary general Valcke

“The FIFA Emergency Committee decided, on 9 January 2016, to dismiss Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA Secretary General with immediate effect”, Zurich-based FIFA said in a statement without giving a reason for the dismissal.

Valcke is alleged to have been linked to a scheme that meant to sell tickets for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil at above their face value, prior to the contract being canceled before any were sold. Cornel Borbély, the head of the investigatory arm of the ethics committee, led Fifa’s investigation.

Documents suggest that Valcke was to be the beneficiary of an agreement to sell the tickets at inflated prices at four times more than the normal rate. Jerome Valcke is therefore no longer the secretary deneral of Federation Internationale de Football Association.

The secretary general’s duties will continue to be carried out by Acting Secretary General Markus Kattner, FIFA said.

Federation Internationale de Football Association announced on September 18 that Valcke, who held the post of the organization’s secretary general since 2007, was “put on leave and released from his duties effective immediately until further notice”.

“It is very significant”, said Solhekol.

Sepp Blatter rehired him eight months later.

Valcke, who had served as Fifa President Sepp Blatter’s top aide, was provisionally suspended by Fifa on Sept 17, 2015. He was in charge of the organisation of World Cups. The plane had to turn around and when he got back he was told he was suspended. But the investigators built up a compelling case and we’ve found out they had seen enough evidence to dismiss him straight away.

Since then, the Federation Internationale de Football Association ethics case into Valcke has hardened.
