Police in the city, which is the capital of Manipur state, said the deaths occurred as walls, staircases and roofs in some buildings collapsed. The toll may rise later in the day as the condition of some are said to be serious.

In the Manipur state, people saw their furniture “knocked over” but there is no major damage reported.
Four of the five killed in Manipur were women, Inspector General of Police Clay Khongsai told IANS.
At least 100 people have reportedly been injured in Bangladesh as many with panic rushed out of their residences for safety, Xinhua reported.

Two teams of about 90 personnel of NDRF are bring sent from Assam to Manipur to assist the civilian authorities in rescue operations. “The centre will extend all required assistance to the north-eastern states to deal with the crisis”.
Residents said power and communication links were down in the remote region. A Central medical team comprising orthopedics, surgeons, anesthesiologist and other technicians has also been deputed to Manipur to assist with the treatment of injured people.
This northeast region of India is considered top 6 of the most earthquake-prone area in the world.

Some power facilities suffered damage during the quake and the power supply to Imphal remains disrupted.
