Street Fighter V DLC Will Be Unlockable for Free

Street Fighter V will be hitting PlayStation 4 and PC in Spring 2016. They reiterated that crossplatform play would be available, with a whole different netcode structure in place.

There will never be a Super Street Fighter 5. Zenny, on the other hand, can be purchased with real money in order to immediately gain access to post-launch content. It is not immediately clear what must be done to earn Fight Money (my guess would be win) or how much Zenny will cost.

While other games like Mortal Kombat X have seen success asking gamers to pay a nominal fee for new DLC characters, Street Fighter 5 will offer the ability to buy new fighters using an in-game currency called “Fight Money”. Moreover, Capcom asserts all post-launch “gameplay related” content can be earned by playing the game. Before players who wanted to unlock any Street Fighter DLC, they would have to pay for the content or be locked out of it.

The topic then turned to some of the mechanical changes for Street Fighter V. Assistant producer Peter “Combofiend” Rosas noted that the mechanics, including V Trigger, are being aimed at reducing the overall complexity and opening the door for newcomers.

Speaking of characters, Street Fighter V will launch with a core roster of 16 playable characters, with 4 of them being brand new fighters to the Street Fighter universe. It also reduces the idea of “Shoto” clones, allowing Ryu, Ken, and similar fighters to truly differentiate themselves from one another. Street Fighter V will have one disc that players need to own, and all upgrade patches in the future will be free, thus keeping all SFV players in the same community.

During a Street Fighter V panel at EVO today, Capcom announced a shift in strategy for the series. The biggest news regarding Street Fighter 5, however, comes to its character line-up. That old method forced players to purchase all of the new content, even if only a few characters were really appealing to them.
