Leonardo DiCaprio has taken a leap forward in his quest for his first Oscar, with a Golden Globes win for his intense performance as a 19 century fur trapper in “The Revenant”.

A-listers Kate Winslet and Sylvester Stallone also took home acting prizes at the ceremony held in Beverly Hills, which is seen as a good indicator of which movies and actors will fight for Oscars glory. Damon won best comedy actor for “The Martian”, about an astronaut stranded on Mars, and the film also won the best comedy/musical movie category. The dubious placement of “The Martian” in the comedy category was a running joke throughout the evening – even Scott questioned it as he walked on stage to accept the best picture award. Critics darlings “Carol” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” were surprisingly shut out as well. Oscar nominations will be revealed on Thursday.

The victories for the two films at the Globes put them in prime position as Hollywood’s annual awards season heats up, leading to the all-important Oscars on February 28. The Golden Globes has had that pick right for the past 10 years.

“Many of the Globes’ dramatic nominees, especially Ronan, Blanchett, and Larson, are considered locks for an Academy Award nomination too”. She also beat out her friend Amy Schumer in the category.

“She’s going to be fine”. “She’s amusing and hilarious and will win many things”.

Kinney said he knew that the 29-year-old actress was anxious during the awards, adding that he couldn’t be more proud of her, reports E! Last year’s victor Julianne Moore (“Still Alice”) went on to win the Oscar as well. “And Matt Damon won for best actor, despite the fact that he isn’t even an actor”.

Leonardo DiCaprio, victor of the Best Actor in a Drama trophy, says he hopes studios and financiers may back more films like “The Revenant” which don’t fit the typical blockbuster template.

Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul”, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz, and best animated film went to Pixar’s acclaimed “Inside Out”.
