Netflix has picked up the rights to the remake of Norman Lear’s classic sitcom “One Day at a Time”.
The new series will reportedly co-star Oscar and Emmy award-winning actress Rita Moreno, though the rest of the cast has not been released, Deadline is reporting. The lead, a former military mom, will have to wrangle a “radical” teenage daughter and “socially adept” tween son, with the help of her “old-school”, Cuban-born mom and their building manager, Schneider. It starred Bonnie Franklin as the divorced mother and co-starring Valerie Bartinelli and Pat Harrington, who died last week.
Mike Royce (Men of a Certain Age) and Gloria Calderon Kellett (How I Met Your Mother) are set to act as executive producers, as will Lear. The duo definitely knows a little something about hit sitcoms, although that doesnt necessarily mean that those shows popularity will carry on to this reimagining.
“One Day at a time” was originally owned by Sony and this marks the third collaboration between Sony and Netflix.
News of Netflix’s pickup of the reimagined series comes as more television networks prioritize diverse casting practices in TV development. As well, Netflix is also perfectly happy with bringing in projects that already have fanbases built into them. Among those have been “House of Cards”, “Orange is the new Black” and “Narcos”.
Production on “One Day at a Time” will be announced later this month. So its hard to tell how much of its audience will be the same this time around.
