Mysore lab which examined Maggi sample on Supreme Court direction on Wednesday told the court that level of lead in Maggi is within permissible limit.

According to reports, the top court has asked the laboratory to submit its reply with a report within eight weeks. “We would like Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore to apprise this court on two aspects, whether the test report relating to lead and glutamic acid are within the permissible parameters and to clarify that those are within parameters prescribed under the Food Safety Act”, it said.

A bench comprising justices Dipak Misra and N. V. Ramana asked CFTRI to make a requisition to the government for further samples of Maggi noodles, if required. It added the institute in Mysore shall also give clarification on the test relating to glutamic acid. An NCDRC-appointed commissioner will have to arrange for further samples from a Lucknow warehouse if the CFTRI seeks them. It is also hearing Nestle’s plea against an order of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission for more tests on Maggi in Chennai.

In June 2015, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had banned Maggi noodles, saying it was “unsafe and hazardous” for consumption after finding lead beyond permissible limits.
