PlayStation Store pre-orders of Hitman are being cancelled

Fans got a message from Sony today that all digital pre-orders for the game were being canceled because “the configuration of the product you pre-ordered has changed significantly”, in their words. If you have pre-ordered the game, you will receive email confirmation when your pre-order has been cancelled.

This follows the news yesterday, reported by VideoGamer.com, that Hitman had been pulled from the European PlayStation Store.

We reached out to Square Enix and received the following response: “If your HITMAN pre-order is cancelled, don’t panic”. Square Enix initially were going to release the game episodically. A representative explained that the “configuration of the product you preordered has changed significantly”, resulting in the cancellation of the existing order.

Either way, chalk up yet another reason not to pre-order something, at least digitally. So canceled pre-orders are rare and usually not the best of news. They’re the guaranteed revenue most publishers use to figure out just how a game will sell and how much it makes. They have provided an explanation for why pre-orders on PSN are being cancelled, and reiterated that the game is still set to launch on March 11. In a time when so many titles release broken or faulty in some form or fashion, gamers are ready to see a fully functional game at launch. Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Release date is still March 11th.
